The shapes of letters and words themselves are visual images. When individuals begin to immediately recognize patterns of letters (words) it is much easier to relate specific visual letter patterns to specific sounds. Mental imaging strengthens the ability to remember the visual patterns.

Imagining ability also helps individuals organize their thoughts more effectively. It affects how an individual remembers and relates information orally and in writing.
